Description

I'm not even gonna TRY to hide it.  I turned Makuta, dominant male of the Shadow Deaths, into a Bounty Hunter.
I'm so sorry.  I really am.  I'm not responsible for the deaths/captures of your friends and loved ones.
He just scares me to death and he won't listen to me.  lD
But he's still my baby.  <333

EDIT: If needed, I can add more to his history.  Usually I get better at that once I've roleplayed a character once or twice...

Physical Attributes

Exurtha is a completely normal fishing cat: medium is size, very stocky with a short body, legs and tail.  Unlike most other cat species, fishing cats have a flat head.  They also seem to have big noses, something Exurtha actually gets self-conscious about.  His pelt has several areas where spots fade into stripes, his belly being the only place with true spots.  His fur has the natural wild grayish brown color.  Other than his eyes there's nothing unusual about him.  Exurtha has two scars.  Both of these he received on his last mission as a mercenary's cat, which only he survived, while not unscathed.  These scars serve as a reminder to him that emotional relationships have dire consequences.

Exurtha's armor consists of things he's had for years.  He has a dog skull on his head, everything else being made of simple cloth and iron, with a few gems here and there.  The exact purpose of his cloak is to help his disappear at night, so he'll only wear it when it's dark or when it's cold.  Exurtha used to have a full set of bracers, but two were stolen from him in a fight.

History

I am done pretending.
You have failed to find what's left.
I will suck you dry again...

Exurtha began his life rather normally.  He was born in China, to a single mother fishing cat along with his sister, Lotus and brother, Tokala.  His real father wasn't around, but his mother's best friend was a tiger, and served as the main fatherly figure for the four months that Exurtha was in the wild.  The tiger had a lot of hatred towards the nearby human village, who had taken his cubs and killed his mate just a few weeks before Exurtha was born.  Exurtha never knew this, but he was told how most cats would just sit around and let the humans control them, and how the tiger thought that they should do something about it.  Exurtha took his 'father's' words to heart, and began to get an idea in his head.  Sneaking off when his mother wasn't looking, Exurtha went to attack the village and show them who's boss. Naturally, it didn't end well for the young cub.  The humans liked his determination and ferocity, and captured him.  He never saw his parents after that day, because the fishing cat cub began the long journey to Europe immediately, headed for the city of Rome, where his life would take on an entirely new course.

Some are not worth saving.
You are such a pretty mess.
I will choke the life within...

Most cats taken to Rome were thrown in the pits, or in the coliseum.  Exurtha, however, was still very young at the time, which made him qualify for many other types of opportunities.  The first human who bought him sought his as a companion, who soon discovered he was much too rowdy for a pet.  So when weaned, he was instead sold to a mercenary, who trained cubs to be partners to other mercenaries on their assassination missions.  But before he could do that, Exurtha would have to learn to fight.  To obey; to kill.  Though at least six months of age, the fishing cat was still young and innocent.  He didn't like this idea at all, but unfortunately he didn't have a choice in the matter.  His owner was very harsh with him, pitting him against the strongest cats that he was still capable of killing.  Exurtha was miserable, but out of desperation, became good at what he did.  By the time he was fully trained for dangerous combat, and sold to another mercenary, Exurtha had convinced himself that fighting and killing wasn't so bad.  And at two years old, when his owner retired and he was sold yet again, Exurtha had learned to love and crave bloodshed, much more actively than he does today.

Now you want to take me down?
As if I even care!
I am the monster in your head...

Before now, Exurtha had been quite psychotic when it came to pursuing and killing his targets... he understood he had to support and obey his master, but he never really thought highly of them, or been close to them.  In addition, he had completely avoided any other cats he came across unless he was meant to kill them.  However, when he was obtained by the third and final mercenary, all of that changed.

His new master wasn't quite as cold or greedy as the other two; he was still a deadly mercenary, but he also cared about keeping the law.  Furthermore, he really wanted his feline partner to be his companion, at least one he felt he could trust at least... all of this affected and changed the fishing cat, and while he was never very affectionate, in turn Exurtha grew close to his new master.  He was loyal, protective, and came to perhaps even love his friend.  This was how Exurtha mellowed out, becoming more controlling of his sadistic, malicious nature.  Through their various assignments that they completed over the next 4+ years, Exurtha started to shape into the cat he is now, aside from his trust issues.

In addition, because of his master Exurtha became friendlier with other cats.  In fact, he came across a snow leopard named Cyan one day after an assignment.  After that, the two of them met regularly, and perhaps they even came to love each other.  At least, that's how Exurtha might have felt.  But as is obvious, it was all simply not to be.

And I thought you'd learn by now, it seems you haven't yet.
I am the venom in your skin.
And now your life is broken...

The life Exurtha knew for so long came to an aprupt halt.

They'd been chasing the same bandit for months.  He was dangerous, and intelligent, so he kept eluding them.  Then finally, they'd managed to catch up with him, cornered in his hiding place just outside the city.  Exurtha's fur bristled with excitement; it'd been a while since he'd been able to use his skills on a target, so when the fight he began, he was very excited.  But this bandit wasn't going to give up without a fight; Master was having trouble taking him down, and the familiar form of Cyan appeared in the corner of Exurtha's eye.  He explained that now was a bad time, but she only harshly shot back that she wasn't here to see him.  It was now that Exurtha found out that Cyan was the bandit's cat; when she discovered that they were hunting the bandit, she had tried to get him to like her in hopes that when they did meet, Exurtha would refuse to fight her, so she could protect her own master.  Exurtha was hurt, but he was also very furious.  He went into a rage and attacked the snow leopard immediately.  He did still care for her a lot, so perhaps not with the same zeal he usually had.  Cyan proved to be nearly as skilled as her master, so the battle wasn't brief, but eventually Exurtha was giving the upper hand, at which time the snow leopard fled, fearing for her life.  Instead of chase after her, like he might have done when he was younger, Exurtha returned to his master instead... only to see that the bandit had taken him down.  The fishing cat took action immediately.  He took his enemy by surprise,   The two of them tussled for a minute.  Exurtha was injured in several places, but again managed to gain the upper hand, knocking him off his feet and climbing on his back when the man fell, delivering a swift death blow to the neck, ending it once and for all.

It was over.  Exurtha was hurt, but not nearly as badly as his master.  He laid down by the mercenary until he took his last breath, at which time he dragged the body to the nearby road, in hopes that someone would pass and find them; he didn't know his way back to the city, and probably shouldn't go back by himself anyway.  He stayed up all night waiting, until finally, that morning, they were found and taken back to Rome.  Exurtha followed with a heavy heart, all sorts of thoughts swirling in his head.

After the lights go out on you...
After your worthless life is through...
I will remember how you scream...

A lot happened for Exurtha that night.  All in all, he came to one conclusion: while there are good things about relationships, you should be sure of who you're dealing with before you open up with anyone, and above all, don't let your emotions control you.  He never took relationships lightly after that, and became rather hesitant to connect with other cats.  That is how he got over his grief.

He fell into the hands of his master's sister, and for two or three months, Exurtha worked as a coliseum fighter.  He missed being a mercenary's partner, but he was still fighting and killed, so it could have been worse.  However, his new owners' neighbor eventually convinced them to consider him as a Bounty Hunter, into which he was soon drafted.  He wasn't quite sure if he wanted to.  It still felt weird without his old companion, so he didn't really feel like working with a bunch of cats, but he didn't complain.  After a month, Exurtha began to see what it meant to be a Bounty Hunter, and after another month, he was used to his new life.  What he had experienced before was terrible, and it had changed him, but he was a bit old to be too badly traumatized.  He would grow to enjoy this immensely.  It's been, in total three months since he became a Bounty Hunter.  He hasn't forgotten his past.  Does it still bother him? Maybe a little.  He reflects on his own history when the situation calls for it, but doesn't let it slow him down.  He's still unsure about entirely trusting his fellow Bounty Hunters, but he's more than willing to work as a team.

I can't afford to care!
I can't afford to care...

Personality

SUMMARY:

While he does appear to be a strange character, there are reasons for why he became the cat he did.  Exurtha, at first, didn't like to kill or fight; he was just like any cat in the coliseums, only placed in a different situation.  However, he began to tell himself after a while that it wasn't so bad, which led to him beginning to learn to like to kill, fight, and torture his targets.  It was completely necessary for him to begin to think this way, otherwise he never would have survived without becoming cynical or insane.  This is where he got his fighting ability.  Due to his experiences in the field with his different masters, the fishing cat became hostile, cold, serious and very withdrawn from other cats, all mostly on purpose.  However, he also developed loyalty and respect, due to his relationships with his owners.  This is basically how Exurtha's personality formed, but like all my characters I'm likely to explore the possibilities more as I develop him.

~~~
Lawful - "Freedom is a nice concept.  Unfortunately, you don't write the laws.  You broke them.  And for that, you must be punished."
Exurtha is far from being moral, but all his life he's acted as a cat who helps to bring justice to those who broke the law.  He cares about the rules that humans place on them, and is more than happy to actively assert them on the cats of Ferox and Solus.  In to the addition to them being traitors to the Roman Empire, they're also outlaws.  They don't deserve her respect or compassion, unless they're cubs of course.  He might have escaped with them if he was younger, but after years as a mercenary's companion, Exurtha has long since given up on things like freedom.  He understands how the escapees feel, but sees them as a bunch of idealists and bleeding hearts who don't understand how the real world works.  Even more so, he simply doesn't care.
Partially Apathetic - "Don't know, don't care."
He's not completely without empathy; when it comes to his fellow hunters and allies, Exurtha with sometimes sympathize and try to soothe them.  SOMETIMES.  But he's completely capable of not showing it, or really not caring at all.
Gleefully Sarcastic - "Oh, I'm sorry.  Did that hurt?"
Aside from around cubs, Exurtha tends to use a lot of sarcasm.  Not so much the irritable sarcasm that's pretty well know, but more the taunting, happy, or even casual sarcasm.  It may be used towards his opponents, or to tease a fellow Bounty Hunter, or just in average daily life.  Of course, he'll use it too sometimes if he's angry, but less so.  Usually his sarcasm is complimented by a smile or a sneer.
Capable - "Oh, come on.  It's not like I've never fought before.  And in the end, how many of use can really say that we haven't?"
Though he's always trying to learn, and expand his horizons, and he rejects vanity... Exurtha is by no means new at what he does, and he doesn't like it when others treat him otherwise.  Of course he can take criticism and is always trying to learn more, because life is all about learning and adapting, but when others treat him like he's not capable or he doesn't know what he's doing, he will retort back.
Hard-working - "Get off your rump, rookie! Nothing is accomplished by sitting around all day and night!"
On no level whatsoever does Exurtha believe in a state of laxity.  He believes that everyone needs to do their part as actively and correctly as possible.  A lot of luxurious things are available to the Bounty Hunters, but Exurtha hardly ever takes part in them, because if there's something that needs doing, and there always is, he's going to do it.  Of course he'll take the time to relax and kick back if he has to, and he does try to enjoy the services available to the Hunters, but as a general rule he'd rather be making good use of his time, either helping out the hunters, doing their duties, or trying to perfect and add to his skills.
Adaptational "Heh... I like your style, kid.  Mind showing me a few moves?"
Exurtha believes that there are many different means to the same end... it doesn't pay to only have one style or tactic, because different ones work better according the situation.  For this reason, he has a very open mind, and will actively observe or learn from others' strategies and fighting styles and adapt them into his own for use on the hunt.  From time to time, he'll even observe apprentice training, so that he's learning himself.  It's quite likely Exurtha would have asked to be an apprentice if he was much younger.
Cautious "Yeah, I'm gonna bolt.  You ain't worth my time.  There are plenty of fish in the sea, as they say."
Exurtha is not a coward... but he does judge his opponents and decide whether it's worth it to attack them.  While it's true that he's not weak despite being a smaller species, he's not going to go up against a lion or tiger, at least not without good backup, and if a situation turns sour he's likely to flee, at least for the moment.  Others may see this as cowardice, to which Exurtha will always point out that he'd rather be a coward than a moron.  Staying and fighting in a situation where you know you'll lose is something a cat lacking brains would do, in his opinion.
Immoral "Your sense of right and wrong won't protect you, and it won't get the job done."
Of course Exurtha has moral values.  He's not a monster.  He feels love, fear, loyalty, and all those other things.  However, he doesn't find them important enough to let them get in the way of his work.  Will he kill without hesitation? Yes.  Will he use an enemy's friends and family against them? Yes.  Will he use a captured cub to gain the advantage in a situation? There's nothing stopping him.  Getting someone to fall in love with him, then capturing both her and their cubs is something he would do without hesitation, if he ever had the chance.  In the end he really finds his job to be more important than moral values.  Even though he believes he's doing the right thing, he won't let a sense of right and wrong stop him from his goals or missions - he'll do whatever it takes, even if it means other hunters will get hurt (in some situations anyway; he tends to think more of himself in battle, but of course he needs to take others into consideration too.)  It's all a part of the job description.
Withdrawn "...explain to me why getting to know you would benefit me in the slightest."
Exurtha is willing to form complex and strong relationships with other cats, however it rarely happens.  When it does, usually it's because the other cat has some strength or ability that he could use to his advantage, or it's a cat that he admires extremely.  Or, in other cases, those he doesn't like... they do say that you should keep your enemies even closer, after all.  While this seems rather selfish, this is due to his previous role as a mercenary's cat.  He once got attached to a cat he later had to kill, and as a result he hasn't formed serious relationships unless he wanted that cat on his side.  However, you can expect Exurtha to loosen up in this area as time goes on, depending on what the Roman Bounty Hunters are like.  Eventually he will be more open to close friends, perhaps even romance, but it will take a LOT for him to get that far.  This fishing cat will often exploit his enemies' emotional weaknesses, and for that reason he doesn't like to reveal his friendships.  Right now though, were that to happen, he would put his job before the other cat... revealing that it really is a professional thing.
It's also worth noting that he grew EXTREMELY close to his previous owner, but after he was killed, Exurtha has decided that he'll only open up to someone he's completely confident he can trust, and is sure their relationship will last.
Everyone Has Standards "...sorry, that ain't gonna cut it.  I'm not your cat for this job."
He's always been the type of character who is generally sadistic and nasty, even selfish sometimes... but I've tried to give him more personable traits.  Exurtha has feelings.  He knows love, grief, and fear.  And even though he appears a little psychotic, monstrous, even evil to some, he does have his standards.  Granted, there are a LOT of lines that he will cross... and he feels that he has the right to cross them.  Exurtha doesn't see himself as evil, rather as an extremist; though he likes to kill, and is a sadist, he has learned to control himself; Exurtha will only kill if he's asked to or if he feels someone needs to die.  He's very loyal to his fellow bounty hunters.  He would never betray them, and will support them in battle.  Though he's not afraid to do things that may risk their lives if it comes down to it, he will only do so if completely necessary.  He also doesn't take well to traitors, either... for that reason he shares a hatred for the cats that escape.  In addition, he doesn't like to hurt cubs most of the time.  He will often act like he will because his enemies will believe it, but will hardly ever hurt or kill them, although it's not unheard of either.
Misunderstood "I'm a heartless, dirty monster who deserves to die? Heh heh... ok.  BOO!"
It goes without saying that Exurtha tends to have a bad reputation.  It's said that he was a heartless killer before he became a Bounty Hunter.  While that is somewhat true, Exurtha is still a cat, with feelings and flaws.  However, this doesn't really seem to bother him; in fact, he will actually act vile to make up for it, and will increase such behavior to keep his reputation.  It can be a weapon at times, and he doesn't want anyone to think he's gone soft or anything like that.  This is another reason why he avoids relationships.  He doesn't want to ruin his image.
Friend to All Children "Well well, now, aren't you adorable?"
Despite being vile and irritable, he has a very large soft spot for cubs.  He likes spending time with them, has a large amount of patience for them, and he finds them endearing in general.  However, he is quite easily the worst influence any cub could have in their life.
Irritable "...get out of my face while you still can."
It's not particularly easy to irritate Exurtha, at least not the point to going into a rage, but there are a few things he just cannot stand.  Annoying, loud, stupid, or childish cats will likely receive a bite behind the ear if they refuse to go away, and he will not hesitate to speak out if something is irritating him.  He's a logical cat, which is why these sorts of things bother him.
Berserk Button "You'll regret this.  Oh ho ho, I assure you, you won't get that courtesy from me!"
Exurtha doesn't get mad very often.  But every once in a blue moon, an opponent, rival or enemy might set off his berserk button, and when that happens, you want to watch out: Exurtha does not show mercy to those who push that button.  This is most often the cats that he's closest to in danger or getting hurt/killed, but seeing as he's emotionally elusive, this trait is almost unknown.
Respectful "Understood perfectly, sir! It won't happen again." *bows*
Exurtha knows his place.  He knows he can't be as independent as he used to.  He knows he needs to show respect, and he will go above and beyond to do so.  He will never speak unless spoken to when it comes to his leaders, will obey everything they say, even if he secretly resents them or is plotting against them.  He's even somewhat respectful towards his enemies; or at least, as polite as he can be while tearing at your flesh.
Taunting - "Since when is Ferox taking in mangy dogs, anyway? No, I might as well be fighting a mouse!... then, why don't you prove me wrong?"
Exurtha takes pleasure in taunting his victims, in various aspects.  He may try to anger them to the point where they strike without thinking, and use that to his advantage.  He may also use it to scare them, or make them question themselves.  You can also expect a lot of witty banter from this cat.
Honest "Why, I say, you are certainly looking fabulous today.  Oh, don't mind me.  Just looking to slit your throat."
He's a capable liar and deceiver when he wants to be, but in truth, Exurtha can also be brutally honest, almost in a way that's scary.  He will often use this to surprise or unnerve his opponents, using Baddie Flattery to confuse them.  As a general rule, though, Exurtha is naturally honest, but he's a talented liar too so he's not exactly trustworthy.
This is easily an example of Faux Affably Evil.
Ambition is Evil - "There is nothing more appalling than the strive to rise to power.  And many who are in power fall victim to it, let it control them... it's self-destructing.  Any leader better know what they're doing if they want all my respect, and I myself want no part in it."
There is nothing that irks Exurtha more than a thirst for power.  To him, power is like a drug - sure, it's great and all, but it drives many a cat insane.  Power is destructive and toxic, and he wants no part in it.  He will only truly look up to a leader who uses their power wisely, and has no intention of leading the Bounty Hunters at any time in his future.
Calm - "Alright, that's problematic... but let's examine this situation with a calm mind."
Exurtha has the ability to remain eerily calm in almost any situation.  Even if it turns sour, he will hardly ever lose his cool, and still be able to think logically.  Naturally, everyone loses their nerve sometimes, but in general Exurtha is able to keep it.  He's not easy to scare or to tick off, and as a result he comes across as level-headed.  Exurtha also generally doesn't just rush into battle, so while dangerous he doesn't come across as the main threat in battle.  He finds it to his advantage to wait for the victim to strike first, act defensively and deliver less but more deadly attacks, or counter the enemy's blows with one of his own, using hastiness against them.
Reliable - "I've got your back.  Even if you can't tell."
Exurtha tends to be rather self-serving, and it can be hard to tell when he's going to decide that something may be in his best interest to not do... but unless it's a VERY extreme situation where he feels he won't be able to assist his fellow hunters, Exurtha will always be keeping an eye on those that he trusts, and assist them as he sees fit.  He knows working as a team is an advantage, as with his very open mind he plans to exploit that strength as a new member of the Bounty Hunters.
Flirtacious - "Aren't you lovely? Are your teeth and claws as sharp as that pelt of yours? I'd love a demonstration."
Though he doesn't do this quite as actively as other cats might, he does like to leave an impression on the ladies.  He won't, however, go out of his way to get a female's attention, and he never overdoes this flattery and attention.  As a general rule, he likes a dangerous lady, so getting insulted by this behavior isn't going to drive him away.
Manipulative - "Let's see, you have two choices here.  You die and your friend here dies, or we come to an agreement.  I'd act fast; I don't make these offers lightly, and I fear my claws are about to slip."
One of his favorite tactics is finding out about his enemy personally... their weaknesses, family and friends and allies, and using that against them.  Since joining the Bounty Hunters, he hasn't had the chance to use it as often, but when given the chance he will take it.
Loners Are Freaks - "Sorry.  Unless my job calls for it, I prefer to work solo.  If that makes me odd, so be it."
With all his flaws and quirks, and the fact that Exurtha really is a lone wolf by choice, it seems quite obvious that this trope applies to Exurtha.  In the field, he was required to think independently of his partner, and for that reason he still prefers to work alone.  That's not to say he won't assist a fellow hunter in battle, or ask for help if he needs it; but he is capable of taking care of himself.
Sadist - Unlike Ambrosia, who loves fighting more than actually killing things, and will abandon an enemy if they're too weak, Exurtha is completely happy with torturing a weak victim, enjoys killing (he would never have kept up with his masters if he didn't) and if the situation allows it, will actually torture his victim for as long as possible.  In many cases he enjoys psychological torture more than physical torture, but he doesn't have as many chances to practice it, so will settle for either.  However, he's not brainless, unreasonable or crazy.  Exurtha will control his sadistic self if it means he won't be able to complete the job, and even then has learned to control it so it doesn't allow for the enemy to escape.  This trait was a bit worse when he was younger.
Lack of Remorse - In almost every situation where he commits something others would view as immoral, Exurtha doesn't feel the least bit of remorse, or else his own beliefs or pleasure overrides any that he does feel.  Or perhaps he does, but doesn't want to show it, as a result of no longer caring about the limits he had to push to do his job.  In the end, he almost always writes off those feelings and shows no signs that he does feel guilty, but at the same time it does have its limits.  His not regretting his actions may also have to do with his logic and values.  He doesn't feel guilty because he doesn't think he did anything wrong.
CHARACTER ALIGNMENT:
Exurtha lies somewhere inbetween Neutral Evil and Lawful Evil, being a bit closer to the latter.
Neutral Evil:
He matches types 1 and 3; Exurtha tends to do things for his own advantage or as a means to an end.  While he is sadistic, he has standards, and likes things to be professional and orderly.  He doesn't believe in things like betrayal or revenge, or things that are generally barbaric.  He can be rather selfish.  On the other hand, Exurtha doesn't believe himself to be evil; he truly thinks that his thinking is the good and that his morals, or lack thereof is what's right.  Anything else limits you and drags you down.  He's aware that most other cats don't agree with them, but treats them as if it's simply ignorance.  Oftentimes he doesn't see other cats as anything but as a means to an end, except in those cases where he does really form relationships with others.  He feels he has the right to act the way he does, as terrible as it might be.
Exurtha, however, is primarily Lawful Evil, because he only fits parts of those types.
Lawful Evil:
In truth he fits this alignment better.  The fishing cat tends to lean towards type 3, but also fits type 2.
Exurtha is very obedient and loyal to his leaders, especially if they have qualities he feels worthy of his services, which basically just means that they won't abuse their power and let it control them... extra points if they have values or skills he admires.  He will carry out orders and change his behavior as they ask him to.  Exurtha believes in order and discipline, and will carry them out as efficiently and directly as possible, even if that means crossing lines that others wouldn't usually cross.  He is also loyal to his leaders, and while he wouldn't still be loyal if he was taken out of the Bounty Hunters and doesn't worship them in any sense of the word, Exurtha would never betray them.
With type 2, Exurtha has a personal code that he strives to follow at all times.  This code is often different from those around him, but he does still have limits that prevent him from being Chaotic Evil or truly Chaotic Evil.  It does cause conflict with those around him, but rather than rebel against his leaders and peers, he will often either display amusement of their disgust or dislike, or he will change his ways just enough to work with them, at least on the outside.
Please keep in mind that his alignment may change.  They're based on his previous living styles and way of life, and because the Hunters will work differently than he's used to, Exurtha is likely to develop to accommodate those differences.  His personal ideas may even change later on.
QUICK NOTES:
~Food as Bribe - Exurtha likes food.  It's funny but true.  He'll do anything for a good food item.  He definitely prefers crunchy things.
~He doesn't tell anyone, but Exurtha has a strange likeness to the taste of blood, yet at the same time doesn't actively go searching for it.  Even so, it may make some uneasy.
~Loves the Sound of Screaming - yep.
~Exurtha doesn't like being underappreciated.  He may be smaller than a lot of other hunters, but he's not weak and doesn't appreciate being treated as such.  However, in the face of leaders and important figures he will ignore such misgivings.  The most he'll ever do is try to politely tell you off.  If you bother him about it enough though, he will not react kindly.
~Exurtha feels quite self conscious about his very large nose and doesn't like it when cats say he looks fat compared to most cat species.
[Bullet; Green] "Humph.  We've known eachother for over 5 years now.  She is my creator after all.  I honestly don't mind her like most of the other characters do, even if she's a bit dumb sometimes... she's really easy to scare into getting what I want.  You have no idea how amusing it is when the one who made you is scared to death of you! Do you think her enrolling a character like me in a dA group was mere coincidence? I'm going to enjoy this immensely.
...though she better not put me in that Fairy Princess costume again this year.  I'll put cats on my list.  The list you most definitely do NOT want to be on.
...BUT WHY DID YOU MAKE ME FAT?!"
[Penelope; 599 Words]
There was a full moon tonight. The light bathed Ice Empire's camp, casting a soft, bluish white glow on the landscape. For the most part, things were very peaceful aside from some small sounds emitted from the Apprentice's Den, barely heard over the sound of crickets chirping all around the Massilian escapees.
Little Penny turned in her sleep. Little, uncomfortable sounds came from the lynx cross occasionally, until eventually the apprentice sat up, her eyes wide and pupils dilated. Sighing, she looked down at her paws, playing lightly with the moss and grass underneath her. She'd never been one to have nightmares often... much less about the death of Master. That was a day she tried not to look back on, if she could help it. And after all, it'd been months since that day... she didn't understand why she couldn't forget it. It was over. She had a new life now. That should be enough to let it go... right...?
The pale lynx laid down again in her nest, but as she tossed and turned, memories both good and bad conflicted in her mind; sleep simply wouldn't come. Eventually, her fears turned to the darkness around her, almost feeling consumed by it, as if it might swallow her. Wincing in fear, she immediately shot up into a standing position and darted outside, hoping that it might be at least a little lighter away from the enclosed space of the den.
Once outside, she took a deep breath, and glanced around real quickly. Alone.
...perfect. Just what she needed right now. At times like this, when she felt rather distanced from her empire mates... Penelope needed to be alone. Though a small part of her still wanted a friend or two, right now it was better to feel lonely.
Then she took notice of her surroundings. It was funny... there were patches of lighter color on the ground. Was that... snow? Slowly and cautiously, the lynx approached the patch, and gingerly stepped on it with her paw. But when she did, she felt no cold sensation on her pads. In fact, her paw also got lighter than in was when she wasn't touching the patch of grass. She had to repeat this a few times before she realized that this wasn't snow... it was light. Penny gazed up at the sky, to see a bright orb shining above her. So, that was it, then. Moonlight.
She'd really never seen the moon before... even when she was with Master. Because of her experiences in the cages of Massilia, the darkness had always terrified and threatened her... but with such a large and bright moon... she felt it was tolerable, to be out here... and it was kind of nice... and now that she was able to get a look at them, the stars were pretty. It was certainly brighter out here than it was in the apprentice's den. It wasn't always like this, but... for some reason, today the moon was bigger. That must be why she was less unnerved by the darkness. It didn't stop her from moving her ears in different directions or looking over her shoulder often, but for the moment, she was mesmerized enough by the brilliant sky overhead that she wasn't going to run away just yet. And besides, it would be even darker in the den... where else was she going to go? The only place with light was the city, and she most certainly wasn't going there. No... for now, all she could do was enjoy the moment until she got sleepy again.
